Learning Golf – Where to Begin?

At GOLFTEC, our mission is to help you play better golf. We offer fact-based information and a personalized coach plan that will help you reach your goals. If you focus on the right things from day one, you’ll build skills faster and enjoy the process much more.

When it comes to learning golf, there are three key skills every player needs to develop:

1. Producing solid contact

2. Developing power

3. Controlling direction

Let’s break these down and explain where you should begin.

1. Contact Comes First

For beginners, nothing is more important than learning how to strike the ball properly. Before worrying about how far or how straight the ball goes, you need to make solid contact. Contact is King. When you see the ball fly up into the air consistently, it builds confidence and makes the game far more enjoyable.

New golfers need to understand one crucial concept: to make the ball fly into the air, the club must hit the ground after it hits the ball. This downward strike produces flight. It is counter intuitive, but it is how you make the ball fly properly.

If you set-up to the ball properly, you will give yourself the best chance of success. A great starting point is learning to hold the club properly and stand in a way that promotes functional movement:

· Grip – Lead hand on top of the grip, trail hand underneath. Thumbs pointed downward.

· Posture – Feet flared out and shoulder width apart, weight favoring your lead foot, bending forward so your chest is on top of the ball and keep your arms straight.

2. Start Small and Build Skill

Once your grip and posture are in place, begin with small swings. There is no need to swing hard at the start. Focus on:

· Turning and tilting your lead shoulder under your chin to move the club back.

· Swaying your hips towards target in the downswing. Keep your arms straight throughout. These two things help you hit the ball first and then hit the ground.

· Finishing with your belt buckle towards target, chest high and arms straight.

These simple movements help you develop control of the club and improve your strike. Rehearse the swing with no ball and be mindful of where the club hits the ground. Always try to hit the ground ahead of where you started.

3. Add Speed, Then Direction

Once you start to see the ball flying regularly, you will want to make bigger swings and will start to control the direction. Finding a coach who can help you learn how to develop these skills in a sequential way will help you improve faster. That is what we do at GOLFTEC every day.

Practice with Purpose

Improvement happens faster when you understand what you’re doing well—and what needs work. Practicing with direct video and data feedback, like we provide at GOLFTEC, helps beginners clearly see their swing and measure their progress. This kind of fact-based coaching keeps you accountable and ensures you’re building the right habits from the start.

Summary

Learning golf doesn’t have to be complicated. Begin with grip and posture. Focus on solid contact. Start small. Add speed gradually. With the right structure and feedback, you’ll see the ball fly sooner than you think—and that’s when the real enjoyment begins.
