"Is my child too young for golf?" is one of the questions we hear most from Singapore parents. There is no single right age, but there are clear signs that a child is ready for lessons, and a few things that make a big difference to whether they stay interested.
When Can Children Start?
Children can start swinging a club at three or four through play and simple games. For structured lessons, most children are ready somewhere between five and seven, when they can usually:
- Focus for 30 to 45 minutes
- Follow simple instructions
- Coordinate their body well enough to make contact
- Enjoy practising to get better
Interest matters more than age. A keen six-year-old will often progress faster than a reluctant ten-year-old.
Why Start Early?
- Good habits last. Fundamentals learned young tend to stick.
- Confidence on the course as they grow up
- A sport for life they can share with family
- Life skills - patience, focus, honesty and handling setbacks
What Good Junior Coaching Looks Like
- Fun and games alongside technique
- Short, focused sessions
- Simple, visual feedback
- Properly sized junior clubs, not cut-down adult clubs
Why Indoor Lessons Work Well in Singapore
Heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms make outdoor practice tough for children. Indoor lessons in air-conditioned bays mean sessions go ahead regardless of the weather, and video lets kids see their own swings, which they usually love.
